Hi Samara

My surgeon was the wonderful Dr Peter Bovey. A great Surgeon who is confident, explains everything and definitely knows what he is doing. I had a Lap Band previously (different Surgeon) which was taken out under emergency conditions because it had wrapped around lots of internal organs. I have a huge scar from this and lots of adhesions. My sleeve op took 3.5 Hours because he had to wade through all the adhesions so I can only sing Dr Bovey's praises.

I am sure Rock Doctor Bella will come in and post praises on him as well as we both love him to bits for giving us our tiny tummies.

I am now in Perth but Rock Doctor Bella is still over in Far Nth Qsld.
Good luck with your surgery and you have chosen well with Dr Bovey.
hugs
Jilly

Oh cool. I plan to go through him if i am able to get the surgery done. What was the procedure like with him? Does he use staples internally and externally? Any tips you could give me? lol

Hi Samara

The procedure was great with him. He makes 5 small incisions on your stomach which are covered with steristrips which you peel off about 5 days after the op. He uses staples when he cuts the stomach and then puts a bit of glue on the staple line as well. He uses no drains which is great. Also there are no awful drink tests after the op which some surgeons do to test if there is a leak. I was in hospital 3 nights. .
Roseanne, Dr Bovey's nurse and Ange the Receptionist are great and will explain the procedure you have to follow and send you out the info pack. Dr Bovey will explain the whole operation to you as well. With Dr Bovey, you will have to do the 2 weeks Opti before surgery to shrink the liver.
Read all you can on this site and ask any questions as their are lots of very helpful people on here who will share their experiences with you. If you have anything you would like to ask me personally feel free to PM me if you would prefer.
Keep in touch.
hugs
Jilly

My name is Stacey and I live in Charters Towers ( 1 1/2 hours from Townsville). I actually had my appointment with Dr Peter Bovey yesterday and I am really pleased. I found him to be extremely throughough and professional. My date to have sleeve surgery is the 20th January 2010. I would love to hear from you both and can't wait to meet you.

Cheers,

hey again stacey... wonderful to have another nrth qld'er on board... i found this site a few months ago and was hooked. i was looking at the band at first but come across this forum, along with a few of dr bovey's gals. i took my hubby with me for support he leans a little towards the band because being less invasive at the on set. but tells me its up to me. thats my man.. though in saying that he likes the idea of up keep being a lot less drama with the sleeve. now we have to work around a family wedding etc to book a date....late jan early feb..do you know anyone personally thats been sleeved ? and who is your dietician hope you dont mind me asking...both jilly and rockdoctor have been very supportive...but i am excited to now met another person on the same path as myself at this time... i do know of another local girl she is about 27 or so that has just been sleeved by bovey, but i have decided not telling anyone only my very immediate family , what i know of she went well which is great., anyway by for now, hope to talk again soon......

Ive got a packet of the choc pudding dessert if any of you local gals want to try them let me know , maybe we can meet up somewhere and I can give them to you.

If you'd like to chat with me , and share some of your thoughts and also your milestones through your journey to a better you ...id be happy as

Hi Spinner,
Thanks for your kind words of support.
I find the Tony F much easier to swallow myself. My dietician told me that optifast was really the only one to use. Because I'm finding it hard to swallow any of the Optifast stuff other than the Vanilla shakes and Cappuccinos bars. I also occasionally use the Atkins ready made Choc shake and the Protein Revival ready made shake as well. I bought some strawberry essence yesterday and am going to have a strawberry flavoured vanilla shake today. Its nice with a small mango cheek whizzed up through it as well. Im allowed one serving of fruit a day , so sometimes I use it like that. They said I could use weight watchers packet soups too , but I cant find them on the supermarket anymore , so I bought the home brand chicken noodle and have one of those most days in the middle somewhere. Last night I had a bowl of stir fry veges with a little soy , oyster and fish sauce stirred through it.
Gosh its a real countdown now, one week to go ...woooo !!!
catch ya again

I really am feeling good. My op was on Wednesday around midday.Nausea for about 36 hours but only in waves. I'm surprised at how good i feel...my external wounds look almost healed. I had my gall bladder out at the same time but honestly I feel great I was discharged Saturday lunchtime and I havent been hungry once since. I will be glad to eat something with a little more substance to it then soup though. Its quite hard to get the required quantities of liquid foods into my body in one day, but Im making sure I'm getting some protein based liquids in each day and my Supradyn vitamin. Tomorrow Dads going to make me a home made protein drink with some whey powder , mango and egg just to see if its easier to get down...we shall see..I"ll let you all know how that goes. I havent weighed myself yet , will update my ticker on Thursday after my visit back with Dr Bovey.
So..... I really am happy about how I'm feeling . have.

Hi everyone !
I was banded by Dr Bovey in Feb 08 and it has failed miserably unfortunately. Four months after i had the band it slipped and had to be repaired.. from there i lost about 25 kilos through walking and using duromine but over the last year i've put it all back on which is very disheartening. I'll be seeing him again in 2 weeks i'm going to ask him to perform the gastric sleeve surgery on me, fingers crossed he says yes !!!

If i said he and his staff were brilliant it would be an understatement- he's excellent and so knowledgable. I'm so excited to see all of you supporting him because all of the other bandits i've met in the TSV area have been banded by Dr Baker which makes it difficult but i've found you guys now, and i'm very pleased to hear that your sleevings with Dr Bovey have been so successful.

Fingers crossed for me he agrees to sleeve me !
Cheers,
Sami

Hi Sami,

Welcome. I am being sleeved next month and had my meeting with Dr Bovey last Thursday. He is very aptient and explains everything and more - brilliant! And such a nice man, to boot. I'm sure that he will be positive when you see him as he really understands the struggle people have with trying to lose weight. Townsville people are beginning to meet as a group, so we will need to keep you posted as to where and when.

Alex

Hi everyone,
welllll i phoned Ange and told her i need a longer appointment because i want to tell Peter i want the sleeve. She scheduled me in and then told me i'll have to be without band for 6 months while the stomach heals.... YIKES !!!

I asked her if Peter will yell and she said no but Rosanne will have something to say... She told me i can hide behind her though. LOL !

I'm nervous at having the sleeve- not because of the surgery or anything but the fear of failure.. because the band was so dismal.... Guess i'll have to get past it though. Bring on the 4th March for my consult !!!!

Good news Sam,

I very much doubt the Peter would yell. lol. He is much too much the gentleman for that! But Roseanne, well.......! laughing bigtime. Arnt' those two ladies (Ange and Roseanne) just the best? I have never met a group of nicer people in a health centre, EVER! They are all wonderful and very helpful people and I cant sing their praises enough. Roseanne told me that I can call her ANYTIME if I have concerns or worries.

Good luck with the 4th. I read in the posts that some people only wait three months after the band is removed, so you will just have to chat with Peter and see what he says.

Congratulations on your already substantial weight loss. Even with the hardships of the band, you have done so well.

I'm still sticking with the opti but do find that my will weakens and I struggle with temptation. Up til now, I have been able to resist but, OH boy is it hard, especially when I smell things that I love" like Kentucky chicken, pizza........groan.........sigh.......bigger sigh!

opti is SHIT ! i cheated on it left right and centre before my band.... i suck. lol.
i'm hanging out for this- i need it.. i've been desperate to go walking cos my job stresses me out soooooo much but my husband is still in Afghanistan so gotta wait til he gets back.

countdown is on until your sleeve.... are you excited ?!!!! i was excited about my band. and i lost 25 kilos but i've put it all back on so i'm back at my pre band weight- just thought i should clarify ! lol

I wanted to know if anyone can recommend a good GP in Townsville?....i'm having trouble finding a decent one ! Mine is pretty good but he's hard as to get into and charges like a wounded bull !!

hey sami, i was sleeved with bovey last wed 3rd feb, and come home on sat arvo. i have not yet allowed myself the indulgence of weighing myself,as i want to get on rosannes scales first time.... this is a big deal ,, i am a scale jucnky, my family are laying bets, and cant beleive i havent made the great step up....lol yep bovey is the man...the quiet, deep thinker. and the girls are good too. i have spoke to rosanne since my op, and then in turn rang back to check...another lady was sleeved the same day and we spoke via here before the op, and since then. we catch up at our checkups today, its good as we are both not from towsnsville, she is further than myself. i consider this op as a investment, even though i am drowning in fluid,,,bring on the mushies.. mmmmmm

~bows down to the marvellous Dr. Bovey~

Yeppers Jillybean is spot on.... Peter is da man !

No drains, no catheters, no nasal drips, no swallows..... cos he is that good !

I do recommend taking a partner or friend to the initial interview cos he starts at the beginning with all about the op and gets in the swing of the telling of it pretty quick and doesnt stop until the very end.........quite a bit of time later! He has said the spiel so many times he doesnt need cue cards ! but my head was spinning a bit by the end of it and i was very glad of Paul being there to fill in the blanks from when my brain phased out. He is very thorough and tells you all the statistics & draws groovy little pictures for you and everything to make it all easy to understand....and he has the patience of a saint with all the questions.

The day i had my op there was a nurse in the bed next to me having the op too, and she told me that most of the medical personnel go to Dr. Bovey for any procedures that he does that they need. Apparently there are a lot of nurses that get the sleeve done & they mostly go to Dr. Bovey.......if medical personnel are choosing him then thats a fantastic recommendation & was good enough for me.

My recovery was quick & pain free...except a few twinges here & there the first few days when i moved suddenly and as i became accustomed to new eating regimes.....he is fantastic and as someone else said...having struggled with his own weight he truly empathises with genuine compassion and really gets a buzz out of being able to assist with peoples weightloss battle.

A very humble quiet man with a wonderful professional reputation and Roseanne (his sister - who has the lapband) and Ange who run the office are the loveliest of people who do backflips to help people out.

Have i said enough wonderful thins about him Jilly ? Have i missed anything out ??? lol

I dont get on here often anymore....but i always answer my PM's - so please feel welcome to send me one if you have any questions, worries or just want to say hello.

~cheering Dr. Bovey~

hugs y'all
Bella.......xx

Gosh... I wrote a big long thread here yesterday singing my praises of Dr. Bovey ....lalalalala SmileyCentral.com ... i think Jillybean & I singing nicely in harmony ! lol....

...well when it comes to singing about Dr. Bovey at any rate !

Anyhoo... the post i wrote yesterday has weirdly disappeared - even though it shows on the Home page that i wrote here at 11.04 yesterday..........so Im back today to hopefully amend that oddity.

Peter is a humble man who has a genuine affinity and compassion for people struggling to achieve successful weight loss and has battled his own demon with this as has his sister Roseanne who is banded and quite happily so i gather. He is a wonderful surgeon and comes well recommended with many medical personnel choosing him to perform their surgeries for the sleeve, band & other procedures he performs.....and that for me is a huuuuge recommendation and i wasnt going to argue or question with the choice of nurses, doctors etc for Dr. Bovey.

Another attestment to his skill as a surgeon is that my recovery was very quick, i had a few twinges and aches - but primarily from twisting quickly & awkwardly when i rolled over in bed (i lapped up all the wonderful nursey attention i could get ! lol) and from getting used to a new eating regime.

But no drains, no catheters, no nasal drips and no swallow ...

Sorry - have to cut this short ... a teenage is demanding my attention !
PM if you like... I dont get on this site much these days - life gets in the way too often...but i do answer PM's

love ya's
hugs
Bella....xx

Nope: not a blonde moment: This thread does run upside-down. Take it from me: I'm a red-head.

so i called ange to make an appt with peter to talk about (stomp and whine) that i want the sleeve done and then yesterday i get a request in the mail to have a barium swallow. so i called ange this morning and i said "wtf is he making me have a swallow ?" and she basically told me she's told him i want the sleeve and he wants to check my band positioning to see if i have a slip cos she told me he said my band is fine.. bla bla bla..... i'm hoping he'll be reasonable ! but i've made up my mind. someone who has had a lap band for 2 years should not weigh 120 kg.. i'm sorry but no ! sorry to vent on here ladies... just needed to let off a little steam.
Xx

Hi Sami,

I do empathise - what a blow, but might not be as bad as you imagine. Maybe he is just wanting to see if you have a slip as a precaution as some people do have a lot os scarring etc from the band. My suggestion is do what he askes, as that will ensure that he doesnt get off side. From my discussion with him, I think that he does prefer the sleeve to the band. Give it a go, and we will all keep our fingers and everything else, crossed for you.

Alex

Hi SamiB,

Yep: frustrating, but I wouldn't get too worried until you hear it directly from the horse's mouth (ie Peter's). I'm sure Ange is great, but trying to negotiate the communication between surgeon and patient at second-hand is a dodgy position for her to be in, and she may not be able to communicate all the subtle issues he's thinking about.

Best,

Dark

very true- he would be looking for a slip because i've had one before.. if i do have another one it'll definitely be in my favour. i

'm seeing peter on thursday and i've made up my mind. i'm going to tell him i've read about the risks and i am making an informed decision. hopefully he'll see i'm being reasonable. í had the gastrograph the other day- i thought i was having a barium swallow. i can deal with barium but that gastrograph stuff is awful !!!! i nearly vomited everwhere in xray... lol !!! bring on thursday i say- at least then i'll know where i'm at !

Hi everyone ! So I went to dr Bovey onThursday and it turns out I have a dilated aesophagus which means the band has to come out and then he suggested the sleeve so it's win win for me ! And then Roseanne booked me in for the 31st march for the band to be removed and I thought wow that's quick- I love it ! And then she called yesterday and said we've moved you upto tomorrow. So I'm having the band removal tomorrow !! I can't believe what a whirlwind it's been. The original plan was to sleeve me in July but today Roseanne said June but I want may. Dr Bovey said 2 months is ok. I just want to get back on track !!!!

Hi Loving5,
My names Roz (aka Luvs) Nice of you to drop in ..Not sure if you are aware but theres a group of us Townsville and surrounding areas ladies that try to catch up for a get together once a month or so. There are a few ladies who had Dr Bovey as their surgeon and then a few others who had one of the other local doctors. Dr Bovey was great , I couldnt have asked for a smoother ride.

Although we all share the same issues of weight problems in our lives, a lot of ladies are a lot smaller than you and I so for me its nice to see another lady join us that is more my size. My top weight was around 175.5kg . I lost 20 kgs preop and have lost another 20 kg since my Op in mid January. How is your mother going , you say she had the Op 12 months ago , is everything still on track for her ..i do hope so.
.
Anyway , hope all goes well for you and I look forward to maybe meeting up with you one day.
Take care and be well

Luvs Cat

Thanks Luvs, I appreciate the offer of joining the townsville crew. I would love to come to a catch one day. My mum has lost over 40 kgs since her op last year. She is still losing about 1 to 2 kgs a month. She still has a long way to go yet, like me. I have not lost much yet since my op. I actually put on 4.5 kgs in hospital, which I have now lost plus two more. I had hoped to lose more in the early days. Oh well that life. Thanks again loving 5.
