One of the things I've found very useful is a food and activity diary. There are many subscription (pay) services out there, but I found
http://caloriecount.about.com to be a really good free site.
I've been monitoring my intake and exercise since July and have found that it helps keep me on track with both and hope it will help others. It contains a lot of nutritional information and the thing I really like is that for those items it does not already have in its database, I can add those directly off the label, then re-use them again when I consume the same item at another time.
