I second the sipping, I still find it easier to drink with a straw.
My mantra was sip, sip, sip, At the start to get as much water in. Plus.... Once I got home I always added cordial or juice or something to my drink. It's been three years and I still struggle to drink plain water.

Also, take really small sips, like, REALLY small and go slowwww.

I found standing and rocking when I drank helped a lot, for some odd reason.

Try ice as someone suggested as well as iceblocks, they help you get the fluid in. Best of luck.

Can you ask the nurses for some ice chips to suck on if you're finding water hard to swallow? That's what I first started on post-op.
And try to not swallow any air when you drink, I remember that being very painful.
Hopefully you'll be managing more water soon Tuppence

Oh okay, well being on a drip will be keeping you hydrated.

Part of the surgery is inflating your abdomen like a balloon with gas so they can see what they're doing.
It'll take a while for this gas to work it's way out of your body.

Don't be timid, ask your nurses for all the information you can get before you're discharged.

As for actual advice from someone who has already had the surgery... I'll let you know in a couple of days ;)

I am still in hospital and on a drip. I think I have gas in my stomach as well.

Are you home already?

In my opinion (I'm not a doctor though) 20ml is nowhere near enough. It's very, very important to keep hydrated, especially at your stage.

Are you able to call the nurse at your surgeons office?
Did your surgeon provide you with a dietitian or any other support staff contacts?

i had my op yesterday and want to ask about sipping water. It doesn't hurt but every time I take a small sip I need to burp and I feel nauseous. I have only managed about 20ml all day. Is this to be expected.
