Glad to hear you finally know you're doing it for you! Internal struggle is the worst kind of struggle I think.

Welcome to the future sex-bomb squad!

Thank you everyone I appreciate your thoughts. I went back to my psychologist who I haven't seen in a year but have known her for many years to talk it all through. I had no idea she used to work for 5yrs in an obesity clinic for barristric surgery so she really knew her stuff!

It was a great session and I've come to realise that even though my family have gone down this path, she gave me permission to not do it. It's silly that it takes others saying 'you don't have to, it's your body' (reading everyone's comments) to flick the light on lol.

Once I took the pressure and anxiety off me I know now it's what I want to do for me and no one else. I've also realised, my family is a long way away and on my own (more motivated lately than I've been in years as well):

  • Booked Drs for referral
  • Researched
  • Seen a specialist and asked questions
  • Set the date
  • Reviewed my eating habits
  • Started Optifast

Maybe it's my low self esteem, I really hadn't given myself enough credit for the journey I'm on.

Ok... Next steps :-)

Thank you!

Hmmm that's a bit uncool really. It's shocking to me to think that an entire family would need to reach this point.... :654365:especially when you take into account that it is not scientific fact that obesity is genetic. As denzel said, environmental factors are, hence why it happens to whole families, but if you had been adopted out to a 'healthy eating family', chances are you'd not be obese.

Having said that, the cause aside, we all know the stats for obese people losing weight and maintaining it without surgery are crazy low.

I say, think about if you have your own, individual problems with your weight, how YOU feel, not how they make you feel or how you think you SHOULD feel. Think about if you actually have health problems or health problems that actually are hereditary that you could face later in life, the chances of which may decrease by you losing weight. Personally I think gastric surgery is an extreme measure and those of us that go through with it have spent years thinking about it and trying/failing at other things, and turn to it as a last resort.. Sometimes when I hear of whole families or groups of friends having it done it sounds like it's being done because it's fashionable.

You have to live with your new digestive system for the rest of your life... others should have literally no bearing on that decision whatsoever.

Just my 2 cents.

Woah!
Do NOT go ahead and have the surgery unless YOU are 110% sure that this is what you want.  It is irreversible.
Read, read, read.  And read and research some more.

On the other hand, if you choose not to have the surgery now, you can always have it later if YOU choose to do so.

Sorry, but your family blaming genetics for their obesity  has no validity medically.  Familial lifestyle patterns, including dietary intake (type, frequency, portion size), gut biota and physical activity, does.

All the best.

Hi SS

No I haven't experienced that pressure but you have to decide to do this for the right reasons and they have to be YOUR reasons.

Seriously think about whether this is right for you. It is a big decision and I found writing down the pros and cons helped me make that choice.

Although obviously you have family that have had the sleeve it might help you to read a bit on this forum and ask whatever questions you might not want to ask your family members. There is a LOT of information here that will ensure you know the good, the bad and yes sadly in some cases, the ugly.

Both my son and daughter in law plan on having the sleeve but not because of any pressure from me as that is not my way. I am happy they have decided to go that route, but only because I worry about their health and for my grandson to have both his parents around for a long time.

Good luck which ever way you go.

I'm new to the site and trying to make sure I'm on the right path. The family pressure has been on for a while to get the sleeve like them as our genetics are just against us. I've booked the date but I'm confused about whether I'm doing it for me or based on all the pressure. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
