I was only in for 2 nights, too, Ginger - op Friday morning, home Sunday morning. My surgeon requires a swallow test the day after the op, & if all looks  ok 'leak-wise' and you can take liquids, you can go home. My SIL was also in for just 2 nights. We had no pre existing issues and all went smoothly. I have to say I struggled to watch TV much, though - so tired from anaesthetic & couple of morphine jabs !!!

Yep Ginger I am pretty sure it does although I think found the sound to be a bit low from memory (sorry I was in a different hospital within 2 weeks of being out from this surgery, from something not sleeve related) so may be confusing the sound issue with the other hospital.

I ended up staying staying 5 nights.  I was also kept in recovery till almost the end of the 2nd day. I could not keep anything down for several days, had a lot of pain, had to have a CT stomach scan on day 4 and scan of legs also on day 4 etc.

Point is.....it varies. My hospital and doctor were probably waaaaay more conservative and cautious than needed in retrospect. But they were aware that I lived alone and had no family or any kind of support nearby and would be going home alone so I loved that they were so supportive and cautious. I felt that I received amazing care and support.

Hey froody

That's great!!!! 2 days...... What a great job of drinking fluids so quickly.im hoping I'm not too swollen internally and. Can manage that too.... fingers crossed.

I'm all for staying in if I need to. Im not one to go home if there are risks or against doctors wishes..... But like anyone else I'm assuming, the less I have to be there, the better. I'm a secret sleever, so this also plays into things too. I'm praying all runs smoothly for me.
I love  watching tennis, so I'm actually looking forward to some sitting around time..... No little people complaining about having to watch it!! Haha come to think of it, I hope my hospital has TVs!! I can't remember from last time..... I think it did?

I stayed for 2 nights. Operation on the Wednesday, Friday morning went home - I was able to drink 1400mls on the Thursday so the surgeon was happy with that and let me go with strict instruction to keep the fluids up.

Usual length of stay is 2-3 days, but really, it will totally depend on any complications you have and most importantly, how much you can drink.

I was wondering the same thing! My surgeon told me 1-3 nights depending on recovery. I'm planning on three nights just in case.

Hi all,

I just searched for a thread on how long people were in hospital for and found this thread.

I just wondered what the average stay was for people? How long were you in hospital for?... I'm trying to prepare myself mentally for the stay.

Thanks
Ginger x

I live with my partner and I was in hospital for 3nights. My mum and dad came and stayed for the week. In the hospital I was a bit uncomfortable and I wanted to see my family but I also wanted to relax and sleep. So visiting for short periods instead of sitting around for ages would have given us both a break. It was good to have them at home but once they had gone I was pretty comfortable looking after myself. I did get a bit bored being at home during the day but getting out and about catching up with friends helped that. I spent a lot of time alternating between short walks and recovering on the couch. You're also kept busy trying to get in all the required fluids in the early stages. If you're prepared, you should be ok physically but it is nice to have a bit of company when you're recovering

Thanks youngbelle I appreciate that very much. I think I might ask my mum to come and stay for five days if she can.

Cheers

Hey

I live alone, with surgery i was told 3 nights before hand so i was in hospital for 4 days.
I found it was really isolating so when i got out, not that i needed help it was nice to stay with my mum for the company. If you have a shorter hospital stay it would probably be nice to have people help. But you will probably find its not necessary.

Exciting times ahead for you.

PostSubject: Typical length of stay in hospital?    Sun 28 Jun 2015, 2:52 pm

Hi guys

I generally live alone and am looking to plan for some family to stay and help when I have the surgery.

While I know it is very individual I would be interested in how many nights people typically stayed in hospital, and also, how long they were at home before they could look after themselves reasonably well? Was it important to have people coming to visit in hospital for extended periods, or is it more helpful back at home?

I appreciate it is all guess work but as my family will look at taking time off I want to give them some guidance.

Thanks everyone :)
