Hey there :)

My surgeon is at The Victorian Obesity Surgery Centre in Heidelberg.

www.vosc.com.au

As the two lovely ladies before me said, you do need to have a referral to the specialist (especially so that Medicare will pay a rebate towards the consultation, otherwise they will not).

And yes, also some surgeons have different criteria for offering different weight loss surgeries.

Good luck!!

Mine isn't exactly Northern Suburbs... It may have been once because it's called Darebin Weight Loss Clinic.  (Now in Bulleen).

Start with your Doctor as Wendy said and get a referral.  They might have a surgeon in your area they can recommend.

Hi Flabz,

I can't help you with a surgeon in your area but I'm sure some of the Melbournites on here will happily give you some ideas.  In respect of your other questions...

1) You can't just call the surgeon and make an appointment.  You need to get a referral from a GP (your GP may have knowledge of a good surgeon too).

2) The surgeon will not say you are "not allowed" to have the surgery but they certainly have the right to not be your surgeon if they feel there are circumstances that mean you don't need or should not have the surgery (eg; if you had another condition that could put you at risk).  You would then be free to approach other surgeons if that happened.  As long as you have a BMI in the obese range and no big health issues that could put you at high risk, you should be fine though.

Best wishes,

Hello everyone
I'm new to this site, and I'm glad to finally have some answers to some questions

My question is where do I start, I have joined PHI and has nearly been a year, I need a surgeon, preferably in northern suburbs of melbourne.
When I do find a surgeon can I just call and make an appointment?
Can the surgeon say that I'm not allowed to have the surgery?

I'm 23 years old
I weigh 112kg
And I have 2 children
