Hi - I too am a newbie from Tasmania embarking on research.  I'm relatively new to forums as I've not really used much before...so hope this works.

Interesting to hear that no-one in Tassie does the sleeve and this confirms the bit of web research I have done thus far.  Also I wasn't aware about using Super for such procedures so will have to investigate that further as I don't currently have Private Hospital Cover.

I'm ashamed to say my BMI is 49. I've tried many things and if I have had success it's only to pile it all back on again ..... as I'm sure many are familiar with.  In my research I came across "Less Dangerous Curves" Blog which pointed me in the direction of this forum....what a great thing.

Nini and Me, would love to talk to you too if you have any info or recommendations as to who to see in Melbourne or how you went about it.  I'm also in the NW.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Hi mazzie, 18 months ago I felt like you. Although I am technically a sleeve 'failure' (ie, didn't lose like expected and struggle to not put on now) I have to say I am sooo glad I had the sleeve. Within the first months my blood pressure problems were gone, my diabetes is gone, I don 't even bother to measure my sugars anymore, and they have stopped testing my hba1c due to consistently normal results, and there are many many other benefits that have made my life sooo much easier. Although my BMI is near 40, as my surgeon said, 'on paper I am very healthy'. ....  I also weighed up the pros and cons, and I as was looking down a very dark road before, I didn't want to have to travel it without trying to make things better. Best thing I ever did. All the best wishes for you, there is a lot of support and great people here.

Hi Mazzie,

No surgeon in Tasmania does the sleeve.
They do the lap band but this did not appeal to me and I know some people personally who had this done and have had so many problems.

Im in the North West and through Nini obtained the name of her surgeon in Melbourne and had the sleeve done last January.
If you are in Hobart you can get cheap flights to Melb (unlike here on the North West where it costs a fortune to fly).

I have lost 30 kilos (4 stone) and have not regretted my decision.
You can still eat food just not in vast quantities and eventually the brain does adjust.

Good luck and will be good to follow your progress.

Welcome to the site!

Nice to hear from another Tasmanian.

I had my Sleeve done almost 2 years ago now. It's really important to do a lot of research and feel comfortable with your decision. There is so much information available on this site. Click on the search button at the top of the page and type in what you're interested in. If you can't find it there just ask. I did a lot of research and eventually had my Sleeve done in Melbourne. Feel free to private message me if you like.

It's such a stressful, exciting time trying to decide if it's the right choice for you but there is a lot of support here.

cheers Nini

Hey everyone! I've been doing research into getting Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery since my Endocrinologist recommended it to me yesterday. I've been suffering with yo-yo weight gain most of my life. I try really hard to diet and exercise but it's difficult to stay motivated.

I'm 30 with two young kids and a really supportive partner. Yesterday at the doctor's surgery I weighed in at a whopping 175kg. I'm 177cm tall, which puts my BMI at 55. Last visit 3 months ago I weighed in at 180kg.

Recently I've been diagnosed with insulin resistance (pre-diabetes). Some of my kidney function tests came back not so good. And my blood pressure is VERY high, on Coveram 5/5mg it's 145/110, when I wasn't on medication it was usually 160/130, and the highest it's ever been was 250/175 while I was in labor with my second daughter. I'm terrified of dying and leaving my kids without a mum. I want to be a good mum for them, right now I can't be because I have a hard time even walking anywhere without a LOT of pain (in my hips, knees, ankles etc.). I really need this surgery, it's my last hope of having a normal life.

I'm currently researching health insurance, superannuation funding and the best place/surgeon to get it done. I'm in Tasmania so travel is a worry for me also. Has anyone in Tasmania had a sleeve done in Hobart?
