| Cool! That gives me an EBMI of about 27, which is more realistic than 25, based on last time I got that low (I looked far too scrawny @ 25). _________________ Not for re-publication without permission of the author.

| Well...I calculated this for 2 different times...for my BMI before I was banded...which was 47.3 it says i should get to 29.6 which is about 80kg for me. For my current BMI before my bypass...whichi s 38.5...it says I should get to 26.7 which is around 72kg. A BMI of 25 which would sit me in the "NORMAL" category is 68kg. I would love to be normal!!! Do I dare to dream??? _________________ Banded June 2008 - 128.8kg Band removal & Bypass 18/3/10 Goal 1 - To get under 100kg - achieved 28/3/10!!Goal 2 - 85kg for my birthday 20/7/10 Goal 3 - Initial goal of 75kg by 03/10/10

| What your weight now will be more realistic. But has been said do not let the estimate be set in stone you can work hard and go lower :) that realistic bmi has a LOT to do with the extra weight of skin and bone muscle etc needed to haul a bigger body. So it is fantastic dropping weight before your surgery it will make the surgery sooooooo much easier and safer. It will also give you a great head start. applesauce _________________ Highest Weight well over 165kg we guess closer to 200kg Weight starting optifast 142kg 31st August 2007 Weight date of surgery SLEEVED 118kg 19th November 2007 Current weight 97.5kg 31st July Goal weight to see the 80's for Christmas Final Goal weight to see the 70's some time next year |

| Ok, I have a bit of a silly question here.
My current BMI is 46 which would give me an EBMI of 30.18, however I am trying to lose as much weight before the operation (which is in August) as possible to decrease liver size and make the op easier. If I get to my goal before the op my BMI will be 36 when I am sleeved. The EBMI based on this is 25.88. So, my question is when do I take my "initial" BMI from - my weight at the point at which I am considering the surgery, my highest weight recorded or my weight at the point I am sleeved? I know it sounds a bit silly but it means a difference of approx 15kgs, also if the "initial" reading is taken at the point I am sleeved it makes me even more motivated to shed kgs before the op! _________________ Sleeve date: 16th August, 2010 Surgeon: Dr France

| Thanks Apple, very interesting. Now I know what my surgeon meant when he said I have reached his expected goal. Mine works out to be 31.49. I would like to get to at least 29 so I would just be overweight! lol.

| That was interesting. My initial BMI was 51. So my EBMI is 30.83 which is approx 210 pounds. I am currently at 193 - lower than the EBMI. At the beginning I didn't think 210 was even possible... so if I landed there I would have been extremely pleased. However, I kept going past my initial goal of 200 pounds... and I'm not stopping. I am not abusing or starving myself. I'm just sticking to my meal plan. I'll stop soon enough, but I'm not hurrying. Now I'm integrating exercise and trying to build in a little wiggle room to gain muscle before I stop. _________________

| Interesting means my EBMI will be 25.3 rather that my goal 23.8 or about 4 kilo heavier Well I can only try, would be happy to be close anyway. _________________

| That's really interesting, does that work out for most people?
EBMI = Initial BMI x 0.33+14 |

| Abstract: Introduction: The body mass index (BMI) is the most practical method to measure and compare obesity between individuals. The Percentage of Excess BMI Loss (PEBMIL) is used to present results in operated patients and is based on the premise that a BMI-25 is the final aim, on being the upper limit in normal subjects. It is possible to achieve a BMI-25 in morbid obese (MO) patients with initial low BMIs (<50) but it is rare in overweight (OW) patients with a BMI > 50. Expected BMI (EBMI) would be that which should be reached by all subjects depending on their initial BMI. Objective: The objective of this study is to search for, using statistical methods, a formula based on clinical evidence that can identify the EBMI depending on the initial BMI. Patients and method: We analysed the initial and final BMI in a group of 135 MO patients, operated on using the duodenal switch procedure and with a follow up of over 3 years. A linear regression method has been used to obtain a formula that could calculate the EBMI of each patient operated on. Results: We obtained an algorithm in which EBMI = Initial BMI x 0.33+14. If we apply the individualised EBMI instead of the BMI-25, the median PEBMIL was 99.48 (range: 76.75-110.46). Conclusion: This result suggests that the application of an individual EBMI is a more reliable estimate of the success or failure of bariatric operations. (C) 2008 AEC.
