Awesome Dark!!!!!!! Just the thought of a chip fryer caused the recalcitrant machine to relent - and I'm sure you backed up INSTANTLY!!!

Toshiba Shoshiba - yuck!!!

Well... for the exceptionally old among us, or those who really know their computers (and I know you do, Caz), this particular incident involved an ancient, second-hand Mac Plus...or possibly an SE. I forget. Anyway, I was a student, and I was too poor for a Classic.

My Mac Plus (known as "the grunter" for the noise its hard-drive made on starting up) was generally a reliable machine. However, on this occasion it had had a system software failure and it looked as if it had just lost the previous 2 years' work. I wasn't entirely sure how recently I'd backed up...because I was complacent about this hitherto reliable machine.

I'd gone through all the normal cures (banging the side of the machine; soft reboot; hard reboot; boot up the bracket etc) and nothing had worked. The guy at "technical disservices" had offered, enthusiastically, to reformat my hard-drive (which would have totally and permanently killed any chance of recovering the work). I declined his generous offer, but didn't quite trust myself around the machine for a bit... so I then nicked off to the Uni Ref for a calming cuppa, and happened to notice that the chip fryer was almost exactly the dimensions of the Mac Plus...

Happily for the machine, its must have had a telepathic inkling about my cybercidal thoughts, because it booted up beautifully next time we met...

As for the allegedly bombproof Toshiba laptop...but that's best not mentioned. It's bad for my blood pressure!

Computers! Can't live with 'em! Regret it instantly if you throw them in the chip fryer (don't ask me how I know!)

Re-established stable internet connection only yesterday...

It's back now.
I looked 5 times and reloaded my browser etc but the Diary section was most definitely not here when I posted the message last night. About half an hour or so after I posted, I looked again and it was back.
Strange....

I can't seem to find my diary. Do you know where it is?
Last saw it yesterday.
